Human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the virus infection that
eventually causes AIDS. HIV can be transmitted by unprotected
sex, particularly when there has been exposure to multiple
partners, and by intravenous drug abuse where needles have been
shared. Blood products are now screened for HIV and do not pose a
risk. We now have evidence that treatment of HIV positive women
during pregnancy with an antiviral drug reduces the likelihood of
transmitting the disease to the unborn child. In addition, HIV
positive mothers can be counseled to bottle feed rather than
breast feed their baby as this too reduces the likelihood of
transmission. Additionally, treatment of an HIV infected person
with antiviral drugs will reduce the presence of the virus to
insignificant levels prevent progression of disease. The earlier
treatment is started, the better. In the light of this knowledge,
in conjunction with our local hospital ante-natal care providers
we are routinely offering HIV infection screening with a blood
test at booking. You will receive full information about this and
other screening tests we offer.
